Cycling across the Island of Schalkwijk

On Schalkwijk Island you cycle through a beautiful river landscape and past historical sights. You can also hop across the canal to visit Wijk bij Duurstede.

Experience route
The route starts with a coffee and something tasty at PAND Pannenkoek Restaurant & IJssalon. From here you drive straight into the vast polders. You pass Werk aan de Groeneweg, a fort that was built during the mobilization of the First World War. You can explore the fort with an adventure route. From the Lekdijk you have beautiful views over the floodplains and the babbling river. More inland there are some characteristic farms on the dike.

Fort Honswijk
Wijk bij Duurstede is a beautiful old town. Breathe in the historic atmosphere before you drive back into the countryside with its vast grasslands and fruit orchards. Further on you pass the Wickenburgh country estate, which dates back to 1300. On the Island of Schalkwijk you drive past Fort Honswijk from 1844. After getting off it is time for a terrace!
