Cycling on the Island of Schalkwijk

On the Island of Schalkwijk you cycle through a beautiful river landscape and past historical sights. You also hop over the canal for a visit to Wijk bij Duurstede.

Experience route
The route starts with a coffee and something tasty at PAND Pannenkoek Restaurant & IJssalon. From here you drive straight into the vast polders. You pass Werk aan de Groeneweg, a fort that was built during the mobilization of the First World War. You can explore the fort with an experience route. From the Lekdijk you have beautiful views over the floodplains and the babbling river. Further inland there are several characteristic farms on the dike.

Fort Honswijk
Wijk bij Duurstede is a beautiful old town. Soak up the historical atmosphere before you drive back into the countryside with its vast grasslands and orchards. Further on you will pass Wickenburgh country estate, which dates back to 1300. On the Eiland van Schalkwijk you will pass Fort Honswijk from 1844. After getting off, it is time for a drink on a terrace!
