Walking on the Island of Schalkwijk

Schalkwijk Island is a special area between the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Lek. Here you walk through a beautiful open landscape, along the way you pass several forts from the New Dutch Waterline.

Schalkwijk Castle
The route starts with a coffee and something tasty at PAND Pannenkoek Restaurant & IJssalon. From here you can walk straight into the countryside, where you will soon pass the former Schalkwijk Castle. This medieval castle was demolished at the end of the eighteenth century. Now there is a walking park with a garden complex. It is nice and quiet to walk along the car-free road through the polder, enjoying the peace and vastness.

Forts
Work on the Groeneweg is the first fort on your route. You can do an adventure route here to explore the intact fort (including trenches). From the Lekdijk you then have a beautiful view over the floodplains and the river. Fort Honswijk dates from 1844, Lunet aan de Snel, located further away, was completed in 1846. In the ribbon village of Schalkwijk you will pass several monumental buildings, such as the St. Michael's Church from 1879.
