The Island of Schalkwijk is a special area between the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Lek. You walk through a beautiful open landscape, passing several forts from the New Dutch Waterline.
Schalkwijk Castle
The route starts with a coffee and something tasty at PAND Pannenkoek Restaurant & IJssalon. From here you walk straight into the countryside, where you soon pass the former Schalkwijk Castle. This medieval castle was demolished at the end of the eighteenth century. Now there is a walking park with a garden complex. It is nice and quiet to walk through the polder on the car-free road, you enjoy the peace and the vastness.
Forts
Werk aan de Groeneweg is the first fort on your route. You can take an experience route here to explore the intact fort (including trenches). From the Lekdijk you then have a magnificent view over the floodplains and the river. Fort Honswijk dates back to 1844, the Lunet aan de Snel is located further away and was completed in 1846. In the ribbon village of Schalkwijk you will pass a few more monumental buildings, such as the St. Michael's Church from 1879.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
