Gelderland 8 | The Berkel Valley: Gelselaar – Eibergen

The route follows the border between the Gelderse Achterhoek and the Overijsselse Twente. Both regions are sometimes confused with each other. That is not surprising, because they do have similarities. They share a Saxon origin, which means they have almost the same regional language. Both have a strong tradition of 'needlessness', a form of helping neighbors.

Other similar traditions include midwinter horn blowing and lighting Easter fires. There are also similarities in terms of landscape. Twente and the Achterhoek have traditionally been wooded and peat-rich regions. That characteristic landscape is still fully present along this route.
