Gelderland 1 | The polder and the Zuiderzee: Arkemheen – Harderwijk

The route starts on the border of Utrecht and Gelderland and leads along the Nijkerkernauw and the Nuldenauw to Harderwijk. The Flevopolder is across the water. The Veluwe Randmeren between Flevoland and Gelderland are at their narrowest here.

Fight against the water
The network of locks in the landscape southeast of the route is a remnant of the centuries-long battle against the water. The Arkemheen pumping station is also part of this. It forms the (sometimes still) running engine behind the characteristic polder landscape.
