Description
This first stage of the Zuiderzee route takes you along the upper part of the IJsselmeer, the former Zuiderzee. A large part of this route takes you across the Afsluitdijk from the tip of North Holland to Friesland. Kilometers of fresh air guaranteed!
Cycling along the water
The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen is the starting point of this route. Take a look at this museum before you get on your bike to learn more about the history of the Zuiderzee . This way you can already learn more about the water that is constantly by your side on the entire Zuiderzee route. From Enkhuizen you cycle along the water to Medemblik and Den Oever. Admire the bright white Lighthouse De Ven, Radboud Castle from 1288 and Lighthouse van Den Oever along the way. From Den Oever you cycle more than 30 kilometers over the Afsluitdijk with beautiful views over the water. This dike closes off the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea and the dam protects the Netherlands against flooding.

The imposing Afsluitdijk, which you cycle over, was built between 1927 and 1932. There are locks for shipping on both sides of the Afsluitdijk. So definitely stay here for a while if you like big ships. Along the road on the Afsluitdijk is a cycle path that you can cycle on in a relaxed manner.
