Diepenbeek, Flanders, Belgium
Hiking route: 747461
Provided by: Tourist Info
Diepenbeek is located in the middle of the extensive pond area De Wijers. You walk here along numerous large and small waterways, where you can often spot very special animals. In the summer you can see fields full of flowers.
Village berms
The route starts near Diepenbeek station, so you can also go here by train. You first walk to the Dorpsbemden, an area that stretches between the fishing pond De Pomperik and the Demer. The southeastern tip of the fish pond is now a natural resting area, where grebes and other birds find a breeding ground. You will also find rich hay meadows full of flowering plants such as caraway, marsh marigold and spotted orchid.
Dauteweyers
You walk further to the Dauteweyers, with beautiful graceful ponds. You wouldn't say it now, but they were created in the 18th century by mining iron ore! You walk around the ponds along hay meadows, alder groves, a pond and a pollard hedge. You may see crested newts or kingfishers - on warm evenings you can hear the rare tree frog here. Back at Taverne Demerhof you can have a drink and reminisce about your day.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
