The rich cultural history of Schouwen-Duiveland

On Schouwen-Duiveland you will find plenty of peace and space in the polders. Ideal for getting a breath of fresh air. You will also pass through towns that are full of history.

Swallowing of Bommenede
The route starts at 'T Swarte Schaep. Grab a terrace here with a view of the harbor before you cycle out of beautiful Brouwershaven. You pass Windlust, a remarkably small flour mill from 1935. Further on you drive past the Slikken van Bommenede. Climb up the dike for a view of this bird-rich nature reserve. Just outside Dreischor you pass the Aeolus, a white flour mill from 1739 that is named after the Greek god of the wind.

Picturesque Noordgouwe
In Zierikzee you pass the Oude Haven. You will see, among other things, the medieval North and South Harbor Gates, two of the three remaining city gates of Zierikzee. A little later you pass through Noordgouwe. Until the fourteenth century, there was a body of water at this location (De Gouwe) that separated the islands of Schouwen, Duiveland and Dreischor. Noordgouwe was built on the silted water. The ring around the Epiphany Church from 1462 is still beautifully preserved. What a nice discovery!
