This route takes you through Grosthuizen and Beets, two villages just outside Hoorn. In the countryside it is nice and quiet to walk through the polders.

The path is laid out with shells, special! This polder was pumped dry as early as 1614. It is wonderfully quiet walking here under the high Dutch skies. It will therefore not surprise you that many birds live in the vast grasslands.

Farmland path
You cross the Beemster drainage canal via a charming pedestrian bridge. The building across the street is the Gemaal Beetskoog from 1877. You walk through the Polder Beetskoog via a farmland path. Originally this was land outside the dykes, in the Middle Ages it was dyked to narrow the wide drainage of the Beemster into the Zuiderzee. In Beets you pass the beautiful fifteenth-century church. You walk back to Grosthuizen along the Beemsterringvaart: what a beautiful landscape!
