Description
This route takes you through Grosthuizen and Beets, two villages just outside Hoorn. In the countryside it is nice and quiet walking through the polders.
Buutschoterpad
The path is made of shells, special! This polder was already drained in 1614. It is wonderfully quiet walking here under the high Dutch skies. It will therefore not surprise you that many birds live in the vast grasslands.
Farmland path
You cross the Beemster drainage canal via a charming pedestrian bridge. The building on the other side is the Gemaal Beetskoog from 1877. You walk through the Polder Beetskoog via a farm path. Originally this was land outside the dike, in the Middle Ages it was diked to narrow the wide drainage of the Beemster into the Zuiderzee. In Beets you pass the beautiful fifteenth-century church. You walk back to Grosthuizen along the Beemsterringvaart: what a beautiful landscape!
