Cycling through Schagen and surroundings

The route starts at Grand Café Plein. Here you'll enjoy a leisurely lunch, after which you'll hop on the saddle and cycle through the Pettemerduinen dunes. The expansive polder landscape, with its high Dutch skies, is also a beautiful place to cycle for miles. In the heart of Schagen, you'll see the Christoforus Church from 1883. The towers of Schagen Castle date back to the Middle Ages. Dotted throughout this region are characteristic farmhouses with traditional Dutch bell towers. In the hamlet of Valkkoog, you'll pass the beautiful 16th-century village church. Then you'll cycle through Stroet, the Old Frisian word for swampy. Further on, you'll pass De Groenvelder, a thatched polder mill from 1572. In Burgervlotbrug, you'll see one of the five remaining pontoon bridges in the Netherlands. You're welcome to enjoy a delicious meal at Restaurant de Watersnip, after which you'll cycle back to Petten.
