A walk through the Twiske

Just above Amsterdam you can take a beautiful walk through the Twiske. A varied nature reserve with forests, grasslands and lots of water. So make sure you have waterproof walking shoes!

Rugged swamplands
You start the route at a parking lot on the north side of the Twiske. Centuries ago, this area consisted of peat meadows along the Twiske river. The residents extracted peat on a small scale. At the beginning of the twentieth century the land was drained, but it turned out to be unsuitable for agriculture. Now you initially walk along rugged marshlands. You can spot many birds in this part of the Twiske.

Stootersplas
While walking you look out over the Stootersplas, which is located in the middle of the Twiske. This lake was created after sand was extracted here for the construction of the Coentunnel route. You continue to Den Ilp to grab a terrace at Café De Drie Zwanen. No matter how cozy it is, your car is still at the starting point... Don't worry, you can also fully enjoy the natural beauty of the second part of the route.
