On foot through the Twiske

Het Twiske is a varied nature reserve just above Amsterdam. Here you will find peace, space and water, lots of water. So make sure you have waterproof shoes!

Peat meadows
The route starts at Café De Drie Zwanen. First, grab a cozy terrace here before you set off. You first walk a bit through the village street of Den Ilp. Via a pedestrian bridge you cross the water to the Twiske. Originally, this area consisted of peat meadows along the river Twiske. A century ago, the land was drained, but it turned out to be unsuitable for agriculture. Now the Twiske is a beautiful nature reserve!

Bumpy Pool
Het Twiske has a great diversity of landscapes. You will find forests, hayfields and meadows, reed beds and rough terrain. You can see this in the many different plants that bloom here. You also walk along the banks of the river and the Stootersplas. An ideal route to enjoy nature and have a nice chat with your fellow walker(s). At Café De Drie Zwanen you can have a nice High Tea or drink afterwards.
