Discover Biervliet and the Braakman

Biervliet is a rural village in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, near the Western Scheldt. In the outlying area lies the Braakman, a nature reserve around a former estuary.

Beautiful Biervliet
The route starts at De Gentsche Poort, a cozy family hotel. Enjoy a coffee with something delicious here before you get on your bike. You drive through the beautiful village of Biervliet. Here you will see De Harmonie, a corn mill from 1842. You will also pass several monumental buildings, such as the nineteenth-century town hall and the beautiful village church from 1659. The church has a number of stained glass windows from the seventeenth century.

The Brackman
De Braakman was created by a number of storm tides in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. For centuries, this estuary formed a considerable wedge between the western and eastern parts of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The Braakman was closed in 1952. Just in time, because he prevented a flood of the hinterland during the Watersnood disaster a year later. Now you cycle here through a nature reserve with deciduous forests, flowery meadows and a large creek. How beautiful it is here!
