Go out and get to know the Witte Veen, a nature reserve near Buurse on the border with Germany. This area is known for its varied landscape with heathlands, grassland, ponds, forests and raised bogs. You will also find border posts, smugglers' trails and other remnants of the past here.
Old smugglers' trails
The starting point of this walk is just across the German border. From here you immediately set course for the Dutch border and then walk into the nature of the Witte Veen. This area used to be popular with smugglers who could smuggle their belongings across the border unnoticed. Control officers conducted their surveillance here from the Markslag farm, but they were far from able to stop all smugglers. Nowadays the borders between the Netherlands and Germany are open, but you will still find traces here that take you back to the time when this was not the case. Consider, for example, border posts from before 1795.
Conservation of nature
At the end of the route you arrive at the Haarmühle. At this old watermill you will find a former barn that has been transformed into a cozy restaurant. Stop here for a tasty snack and a drink while you rest after your tour. Enjoy!
Bird watching
Do you like birds? Then you can take a break along the way at the bird watching screen on Gervingshoekweg. Take the time to peer here and before you know it you will spot all kinds of special birds. Here you will find wild ducks, northern shovelers, tufted ducks, greylag geese and little grebes.
