Walking through Burgh-Haamstede

Ringwalburg
The route starts in Burgh, a village that originated around a ring rampart that was raised against robbery Normans at the end of the ninth century. Before you turn left on the Leliëndaleweg, look to the right: a reconstruction of the ring rampart has been made there, including an earthen wall and wooden palisades. It gives you a unique leap back in time.

Soap dunes
In Haamstede, which has grown into Burgh, you can see some beautiful monuments, such as the old village church and the thirteenth-century Slot Haamstede. From there you walk into the castle forest: the only deciduous forest on Schouwen-Duiveland. It is wonderfully quiet in the Zeepeduinen. A herd of Shetland ponies grazes between the dune plants to prevent the open plain from becoming overgrown.
