Along the Meuse River near Ravenstein and Batenburg, you'll find plenty of cultural history. And of course, stunning natural beauty. In short, an ideal area for a day out.
Keentse uiterwaard (Floodplains of Keent). From the dike, it's a pleasantly peaceful cycle through the floodplains. You'll look out over flower-filled meadows and the rippling waters of the Meuse River. Past Grave, you'll pass Keent. In this rugged nature reserve, a former arm of the Meuse River, cut off and filled in in 1938, has been re-excavated and connected to the river on one side.
Batenburg Castle: Cycling along the Meuse River, you'll pass the beautiful town of Ravenstein. Further on, you'll pass through the protected village of Megen. Here you'll see, among other things, the Gevangenpoort (Prison Gate), a fourteenth-century gate tower that was once part of the demolished city wall. On the other side of the Meuse, you'll cycle past the De Kleine Heerlijkheid vineyard, a pleasant stop. Batenburg is a protected townscape, and here you'll see, among other things, the ruins of a medieval castle.
