Amerongen is ideal for a varied walk. You walk past country estates and through wide and bird-rich polders.
House Zuylenstein
Via the path you walk through the meadows towards the park of Huis Zuylenstein. The old country house was bombed in March 1945 on the advice of the resistance in the hope of hitting an SS commander: the Oberführer, however, was absent. In 1980 a new country house was built.
Castle Amerongen
A little further on is Kasteel Amerongen, which originally dates from 1286. Before the German emperor Wilhelm II left for Huis Doorn, he lived in this castle for a year and a half. And here signed the form by which he abdicated his imperial position. There is a wonderful tranquility in the floodplains near the Nederrijn. It is not for nothing that many birds live here. It is therefore an ideal area to clear your head.
NB; the route through the floodplains is closed from 1 oct. until April 1.
