Historical cycle route over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug

This route takes you straight through the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Along the way you will pass many historical sights that are worth stopping for a while.

Historical sights
Park your car opposite Café & Terrace Beauforthuis, in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Before you get on your bike, start with a nice cup of coffee and something tasty from the organic menu. The Beaufort House is also a theater café, so who knows, you might stay longer for a concert or theater performance. The route continues to Austerlitz. Napoleon founded a camp on the heath, but left it as a poverty-stricken settlement. This was the beginning of Austerlitz. A little further on you will pass the Pyramid of Austerlitz, which was built on behalf of Napoleon. You will also pass Koepel van Stoop, a country house on one of the highest points of the fairytale Henschoten estate.

Cycling through estates
During the cycle route you cycle past various estates. One of them is De Viersprong Estate. This estate was built in the second half of the 19th century. The estate is located in the middle of the region and has a striking and charming appearance. You also cycle past Den Treek Estate and Buitenplaats De Hoogt. Buitenplaats De Hoogt is a beautiful estate with a castle in Maarn. The castle was expanded into the current building in 1925.

Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park
All these beautiful sights are located in the middle of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. An oasis of peace, just outside the Randstad. A wonderful area to cycle through, full of beautiful nature. It is an area of forests, country estates and 'mountains'. You can enjoy cycling over the moraine, through heathland, past castles and estates, in the floodplains and the forest.
