On the edge of the Belgian Kalmthout you will find the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide. This route takes you on two hiking trails straight through the nature reserve. Go out and enjoy the peace and quiet in this area full of vast heathlands, forests and other natural beauty.
Heathlands and dunes
The starting point of this route is on the edge of Kalmthout. From here you follow the Schaap en Duin hiking trails across the Kalmthoutse Heide. On the first part of the route you can enjoy heathlands, forests, fens and dunes. You will pass the Putse Moer fen, a swampy area located on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. This area was drained in the 18th century to dig peat and now you will find a fen. At this area, exchange the Schaap walking path for the Dune walking path. This path also takes you past heathland plains, but also past impressive dune areas, wet heathland and meadows.
The Stappersven
Another fen that you can enjoy on this route is the Stappersven. At the edge of the water you can enjoy beautiful views. The landscape here consists of drifting dunes, dry and moist heathlands, swamps and birch forests. You end your tour again on the edge of Kalmthout.
Border park the Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide
During this tour you will be introduced to part of the Kalmthoutse Heide, but there is much more to discover in this beautiful nature reserve. The Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide Border Park covers a total of about 6,000 hectares, so you won't be able to finish walking here quickly. Here you will find varied landscapes and a wide variety of flora and fauna.
