There was heavy fighting in the Arnhem-Wageningen area during the Second World War. The failed Allied operation'Market Garden\\\' cost thousands of lives in September 1944.
During this route you partly follow the Rhine and cross the river on the John Frost Bridge in Arnhem, which is also popularly called the'Bridge too Far\\\'. Named after the famous film made about the battle between the Germans and the British. The latter wanted to capture the bridge in September 1944, but they failed to do so. Along the way you also pass part of the landing areas of the paratroopers in September 1944. They fell from the sky in their thousands, partly under enemy fire. You can hear more about it at one of the so-called listening points of the Liberation Route Europe (L20).
You can extend this cycle route by 23 km and also visit Wageningen. Here the surrender of the German troops in the Netherlands was discussed in Hotel de Wereld. From junction 09 - 08 - 02 - 20 - 06 - 81 - 61 - 83 - 73 - Costerweg up - Right towards Lawickse Allee - Left on Diedenweg - Right on Geertjesweg - 80 - 41 - 89 - 88 - 82 - 07 - 87 Take the standard route again from 87.
