Between Noordwijk and Noordwijkerhout you will find the beautiful estate Nieuw Leeuwenhorst. This route takes you through the lush historical forests of this estate. Enjoy the changing leaves in the trees in the autumn, but also look at the ground every now and then. There are all kinds of
mushrooms growing here that are worth admiring.
Walking on the Nieuw Leeuwenhorst estate
The starting point of this route is on the edge of the Nieuw Leeuwenhorst estate. From here you walk through this romantic landscape full of ancient forests and gems hidden in nature. Here you will find, among other things, the mirror pond, a beautiful pond that shows the reflection of the Dijkenburg country house on sunny days. Take the time to stand still here for a moment and admire all the birds that live on and around the pond. If you are lucky, you can even catch a glimpse of a kingfisher.
Admiring mushrooms
There are also plenty of animals to be found in the forests, such as bats that like to retreat to the bat boxes that are hung here and there. Furthermore, all kinds of mushrooms grow in the autumn. There are more than 5,000 types of mushrooms in the Netherlands, so there is plenty to discover. About 50 of these mushroom species are poisonous, so be careful.
The Dome Mountain
The Koepelberg is a well-preserved part of the estate. The winding paths, stately lanes and vistas in this area used to be part of a lush garden. There used to be a tea house on the Koepelberg. Now you can enjoy nature that gets its most beautiful colours in the autumn.
