Description
The railway line between Hoorn and Medemblik is a nice starting point for a cycle route through this region. You will discover a beautiful harbour town, old stations and enjoy wide views over the polder along the way.
Historic railway line
Full of energy you can set off to explore the beautiful surroundings, where you will regularly encounter the steam tram route. You will soon pass the museum station in Twisk. This station dates - just like the railway line itself - from 1887.
Medemblik Station
In Medemblik you will find the main station building along the railway line: this used to be the starting point of the route. Until 1936, the operation of the railway was in the hands of the Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij, the first railway company in the Netherlands. Now it is a tourist route. Medemblik itself is also worth a visit: it received city rights in 1289. It was a prosperous port city and that wealth is clearly reflected in the many beautiful facades.
