Krimpenerwaard, South Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 700689
Provided by: Groots Genieten
For the first few kilometers, you'll follow the course of the Lek River. From the cycle path, you'll look out over the rippling water, the meadows, and the historic farms along the dike. You'll pass through Lekkerkerk, and further on, you'll reach Krimpen aan den Lek. Just past junction 70, you'll have a beautiful view of the Hollandse IJssel storm surge barrier, built in 1958. Cycle along the river to Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, where you'll cross the water on a bicycle ferry. You'll cycle around the Hitland nature reserve, passing, among other things, the 15th-century village church that houses the mausoleum of Nassau-LaLecq. The final kilometers will take you through the expansive Krimpenerwaard. How wonderfully peaceful it is here!
