Oud-Beijerland is beautifully situated in the National Landscape De Hoeksche Waard. This route takes you through this typical Dutch polder landscape with endless views, winding creeks, dikes, authentic villages and marinas. Time to get on your bike!
Windmill Landzigt
From Oud-Beijerland you can take a ferry across to the other side of the Spui. There you cycle along the waterfront for a while and then cross the river again with a boat to Nieuw-Beijerland. Then it is time to exchange the waterfront for the polders of the Hoeksche Waard. You cycle straight through this open landscape to Zuid-Beijerland. There you can take a look at the Landzigt windmill. This mill was built here in 1857 on the Molendijk to replace a wooden seesaw flour mill. Since 1975, the mill has been carefully maintained by a miller. It is therefore not surprising that this is also called one of the nicer windmills of the Hoeksche Waard.

Protected against the water
The Hoeksche Waard was created as a result of the Sint-Elisabeth flood of 1421. Dikes were built between 1437 and 1653 to protect the island against the surrounding rivers and other water. After that, the approximately sixty polders in this area were gradually drained. The last largest polder to be embanked was the Eendrachtspolder. This polder dates from 1653.
