The mill route

This route takes you along the Kagerplassen. You will also pass through the old university city of Leiden. A route full of culture and nature.

Polder mills
The Kagerplassen form an area where islands and twelve peat lakes alternate. This area is wonderful to cycle through because of the historic allotment pattern, the virtual absence of buildings and the centuries-old polder mills. The municipality of Kaag en Braassem even has the most windmills (20) within a municipality in the Netherlands!

Leiden city gates
In Leiden you will find so many beautiful sights that you regularly have to squeeze the brakes to take a look at it at your leisure. It is wonderful to cycle along the canals with all those monumental buildings. You will pass the Zijlpoort, a city gate from 1667. The Rembrandt Bridge, which spans the Galgewater, is a replica of a seventeenth-century bridge. On the quay is the Morspoort from 1669, the only other remaining city gate.
