Description
Old creeks and villages, vast polders and tranquility: you will find it all in sparsely populated Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. This route takes you from Oostburg on a beautiful trip through the border region with Belgium.
Big Hole
The route starts in Oostburg, the cozy center of West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Just below this village lies Het Groote Gat: a creek that was once part of a larger creek system that was connected to Het Zwin. In 1604 Het Groote Gat was included in the military line of Oostburg. In addition to a creek, the current nature reserve also consists of damp and salty grass lanes, reed beds and thickets.
Passageway
Here too, the landscape consists of creeks, dikes and old towns, such as Sint-Margriete: a completely diked-in village. It is wonderfully quiet to make miles here. Just past the hamlet of Stroopuit, you cross the Passageule for the second time: a creek remnant that served as a defense line from 1604 to 1839 (with little success).
