Provided by: route.nl
Just outside Bergen op Zoom is the Markiezaatsmeer: a beautiful wetland that you can easily view from the saddle. You will also pass through the old center of Bergen op Zoom.
Brabantse Wal
The route starts at the edge of the Verdronken Land van Zuid-Beveland. This piece of land was flooded by the Sint-Felix flood of 1530, since then it has been part of the Oosterschelde. After crossing the Scheldt-Rhine Canal, you cycle through the woods of the Mattemburgh Estate. It is a bit of a climb, because you drive onto the Brabantse Wal. At Het Strandhuys you can enjoy a coffee and something tasty before driving to Halsteren.
Markiezaatsmeer
The Markiezaatsmeer was closed off from the Oosterschelde in 1984 by the Markiezaatskade. After the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea, the Markiezaatsmeer is the largest wetland in the Netherlands. In between you drive over the natural Molenplaat, a drying plate in the Oosterschelde that has become somewhat larger due to human intervention. To the right of the Markiezaatskade is the Zoommeer, a freshwater lake in the Drowned Land of Reimerswaal. What a beautiful area!
