The Asseneedse Creeks

In the Flemish hinterland of Sas van Gent you can cycle through the polders. This route takes you along the Asseneedse Kreken, a unique nature reserve.

Creeks
Just outside Assenede you drive onto the former route of railway line 55A (between Zelzate and Eeklo). This car-free cycle path makes it wonderfully peaceful to cycle through the polders. You will soon reach the Asseneedse Kreken. In this nature reserve you can see the history of the merciless battle that man and the sea have waged for centuries. Many birds breed in the reedlands, and the dikes are covered with many types of flowers. In short, a beautiful area!

Sas van Ghent
In Sas van Gent you can see the hull of a flour mill from 1828 on the Generaliteit bastion. This mill was severely damaged during the Second World War. Further on is the Industrial Museum where you can view parts of former factories. At the Grote Markt in Zelzate you can view the statue of Mietje Stroel before you drive back through the polder to Assenede.
