Description

The route starts in Koewacht, one of the border villages in Zeelandic Flanders. Soon you are cycling through the forests and rugged grasslands along the border. Along the Fortdijk, you pass four former forts built by the Spaniards in 1636 to protect the region against Dutch troops. You can also enjoy the cultural history in the old town of Sas van Gent. At the Grote Markt in Zelzate, you can view the statue of Mietje Stroel ('The girl who peed wherever she pleased'). In 1976, the official engagement party between Mietje and, yes indeed, Manneken Pis was held in Brussels. Via the centuries-old Heidebos and the charming Moerbeke, you ride back to Koewacht.
