Description
Zierikzee is a pleasant and beautiful town. A good opportunity to put on your walking shoes for a beautiful walk.
Birdwatching area
You start the route near the birdwatching area Cauwers Inlaag. This 12 hectare inlaag is located about a kilometre west of Zierikzee and was created by the construction of the current inlaagdijk in 1726. At the end of the last century, the inlaag was cleaned up: silt was dredged and the remaining central islands were merged into one whole. Stop for a while, because during the breeding season you can see different species of birds here.
Monument city
Zierikzee is not without reason a protected cityscape. There are no fewer than 568 monuments, so take your time for this city walk to experience the unique historical atmosphere here. The city obtained its wealth not only from fishing, but also from trade and industry. In the Middle Ages it was already a large walled city with no fewer than six gates. The Zuidhavenpoort is one of them: it served to protect the southern harbour entrance.
