Maas hedge route Cuijk Boxmeer

The extensive Maasheggen landscape between Cuijk and Maashees is unique in the Netherlands. Nowhere else can you see so many, so well-preserved and exuberantly flowering hawthorn and blackthorn hedges. Thanks to human intervention, these shrubs grow into each other. The thorny hedges served as a border between plots and provided wood. This hedge braiding already existed in Roman times: Julius Caesar described his annoyance about it, it took him a lot of effort to pass these green walls with his army! Also special: the Dutch Maasheggenvlechten Championship is organized every year.
