Maasheggenroute Cuijk Boxmeer

The vast Maasheggen landscape between Cuijk and Maashees is unique to the Netherlands. Nowhere else can you see so many, so well-preserved and exuberantly flowering hawthorn and blackthorn hedges. Thanks to human intervention, these shrubs grow into each other. The spiky hedges served as a boundary between plots and provided timber. This hedge weaving already existed in Roman times: Julius Caesar described his annoyance about it, it took him a lot of effort to pass these green walls with his army! Also special: the Dutch Maash Hedge Weaving Championship is organized every year. In the middle of the Maasheggen, Sint Agatha is the oldest inhabited monastery in the Netherlands.
