Along the Waal to Geldermalsen

From Zaltbommel you can drive straight into the floodplains along the Waal. You also cycle through the Geldermalsen area. That will be a day of enjoying orchards and lovely old dike villages.

Lock St. Andries
You start the route in Zaltbommel. In the old center of this fortified city, which is more than a thousand years old, you will see plenty of historic buildings. Just outside the city you cycle along the Kil van Hurwenen, a bird-rich floodplain area. It is wonderful to travel for miles on the Waaldijk. You pass the Sluis St. Andries, which was constructed on the spot where the Waal and Maas once had an open connection. Further on are two former forts.

Waardenburg Castle
You cross the Waal with a ferry, after which you cycle into the Betuwe. Cycling between the many fruit orchards is pleasant. At Poelzicht you can grab a terrace before you cycle on to Geldermalsen. Here you will pass Mill De Bouwing from 1848. Further on you will pass Waardenburg Castle and the idyllic surroundings of Molen Waardenburg, which dates from 1780. How beautiful the Gelderland Rivierenland is!
