There are some beautiful nature reserves in and around Rotterdam. This route takes you along the Rottemeren and the Kralingse Plas.
The Rotten
The Rotterdam Vroesen Park. This city park dates back to 1929, the construction was partly a job creation project. Further on you pass the Bergse Plassen, peat lakes created by peat extraction. From the Lage and Hoge Bergse Bos you come to the Rotte, the peat river to which Rotterdam owes its name. It is wonderfully quiet cycling along this meandering river.
Rotten Lakes
The Rottemeren consist of several lakes that are connected to each other. After the reclamation, the surrounding polders began to settle and peat, so that the Rottemeren are now higher than the surrounding landscape. On the water you pass the Eendrachtsmolen, built in 1727, which drained the Eendragtspolder. Cycling along the Kralingse Plas, which was created by peat extraction, you can enjoy views over the water and the fresh forest air. What a beautiful spot!
