The hamlet of Giersbergen is more than 750 years old. For centuries, residents have fought to stop the shifting sand. In the immediate vicinity of Giersbergen you can still find old roads, farms and hedgerows dating from the Middle Ages. De Maaihoeve from 1244 is one of the oldest farms in the Netherlands.
The Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park is an oasis of peace between a number of large Brabant cities. The 3,500 hectare area is also sometimes called the Brabant Sahara. Yet this national park consists of more than sand. You drive through dense deciduous and coniferous forests, fresh stream valleys and heathlands that turn beautiful purple in August.
The Plantloon estate is one of the last remnants of the Brabant forest landscape culture. It has the atmosphere of an estate in English landscape style, with beautiful avenues, deciduous forests, farms and meadows with hedgerows. There are also traces of the former peat trade and some centuries-old farms.
