This cycling tour leads through the water-rich north side of
the Brabantse Wal and starts at
Natuurpoort Benedensas . This Nature Gate is worth a visit in itself. Take a tour of the historic lock complex, learn about the West Brabant Waterline in the WWII bunker or enjoy a lunch with regional products at
restaurant Beneden Sas . A wooden staircase has been placed on top of the bunker, which towers no less than nine meters above the dike. After climbing the stairs you have a beautiful view of the area.
The lock complex Benedensas was built in 1824 to protect the land behind against high water from the Volkerak and for shipping to bridge the height difference due to ebb and flow. With the completion of the Philipsdam, the tidal difference has disappeared and the lock is mainly used for pleasure craft.
The wetlands of the Steenbergsche Vliet form a special rest area for waterfowl and fish. Rent a canoe or sloop (via www.akkermans.com) and discover the area from the water. In the spring, the relatively shallow water offers a perfect breeding ground for fish such as carp and zander.
Steenbergen mainly tells the story of reclaimed land, which also had to be given over to the sea on several occasions. Steenbergen is mainly polder land, but on a scale that makes it a beautiful landscape. Narrow polder roads, lined with poplars and dikes, meander through the area and make it attractive for cyclists.
