About De Deelen
De Deelen is a typical peat area. Since the Middle Ages, our ancestors have made major efforts to extract peat and create agricultural land. And the great thing is that traces of that first human habitation are still found. Excavations show that De Deelen was very busy in the early Middle Ages. Presumably, large-scale peat mills brought barter and prosperity to the area.
Wetland
De Deelen has the status of 'wetland', making it a nature reserve of international allure. And it is a protected nature reserve. In autumn and winter, thousands of ducks and geese, including wigeons, white-fronted geese, shovelers and barnacle geese, come to De Deelen. Rare species such as black tern, purple heron and marsh harrier also live in the area. If you listen carefully, you may be able to hear the grasshopper warbler singing in the spring.
