Cycling along the Grebbelinie

The Grebbe Line seemed like something from the distant past, but soldiers were able to delay the German invasion here for several days. There was also a lot of fighting during the liberation. This bike tour takes you past several war memorials and the Grebbe Lock.

War Memorials: After crossing the Lower Rhine, you'll head towards Heteren. Just past this village, you'll see the monument erected in remembrance of World War II: the 101st Airborne Division Memorial. This monument was built in part thanks to a donation from actor Tom Hanks, who starred in Saving Private Ryan, the war film about this division.

Grebbe Lock. You'll soon encounter another memorial: the Monument to the 7th Battalion of the Royal Hampshire Regiment in Driel. Via the charming towns of Oosterbeek and Wolfheze, you cycle along the Veluwezoom to the Grebbe Lock, nestled in the woods. Another lock stood at this location during the war, and it played a significant role: water for the inundation was let in here, and there was considerable fighting in May 1940. You cycle back to Wageningen via Renkum.
