The Grebbe Line seemed like something from the distant past, but soldiers here were able to delay the German invasion for a few days. There was also a lot of fighting during the liberation. This cycle tour takes you past various war monuments and the Grebbesluis.
War monuments After crossing the Lower Rhine, you drive towards Heteren. Just after this village you will see the monument that was erected in memory of the Second World War: the 101st Airborne Division Monument. This monument was created in part thanks to a donation from actor Tom Hanks, who played the leading role in Saving Private Ryan, the war film about this division.
Grebbesluis You will soon come across another memorial: the Monument for the 7th battalion of the Royal Hampshire Regiment in Driel. Via the lovely Oosterbeek and Wolfheze you cycle over the Veluwezoom to the Grebbesluis, in the middle of the woods. Another example stood at this location during the war, which played an important role: water for the inundation was let in here and there was heavy fighting in May 1940. You drive back to Wageningen via Renkum.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
