Stabroek, Flanders, Belgium
Hiking route: 623484
Provided by: Noordertuin van Antwerpen
This route takes you through the countryside of the Belgian towns of Stabroek and Hoevenen. A varied walk where you can fully enjoy nature and tranquility.
Old farms
From Hoevenen you can walk straight into the polders. You see flowery grasslands, fields, streams and characteristic old farms. You pass an airfield where you can spot helicopters and planes like Cessnas. It is wonderfully quiet to walk in the polder. Ideal for a breath of fresh air. In Hoevenen itself you can see a beautiful church at the western tip of the Kerkstraat. The tower dates back to the thirteenth century.
The Red
To the right of Hoevenen you walk through Het Rood, a small-scale forest on the transition from the polders to the Kempen. There is naturally a lot of iron in the soil here, the rusting of this metal gives the soil its characteristic rust-brown color. Het Rood was created two hundred years ago as a castle park. You walk through drifts with majestic old beech and oak trees. A delightful experience!
