The Wellsche Heide and the Hamert Estate

De Maasduinen National Park consists of numerous small nature reserves, all of which are worth exploring. On either side of Wellerlooi you will find two of these sub-areas: the Wellsche Heide and Landgoed de Hamert.

Wellsche Heide
The Maas dunes were formed in the last ice age, by sand and clay, deposited by the Rhine and Meuse. The river sand rose: hence the drifting dunes of today. Although the dunes are hidden from view by forests, such as the deciduous forests on the Wellsche Heide, where your walking route first takes you. You can also see some tufts of heather. In the Rode Hoek, northwest of Wellerlooi, you can enjoy wonderfully sweet-smelling conifers.

The Hamert
Your walking route takes you through Wellerlooi, where you can stop for a bite to eat at your starting and ending point at Eetcafé Het Centrum. Then follows the second part of the route: Landgoed de Hamert. This nature reserve is also part of the Maasduinen. You walk along fens, through heathlands and forests. You may see Galloway cattle, sheep or goats keeping the heath short. A beautifully varied area!
