Peat Cruises and Smuggling Legends

This varied cycling route starts at Natuurpoort Visdonk and takes you through the Visdonk Estate and the Rucphense Bossen . Parts of a peat canal from the 15th century can still be seen on the historic estate and on the south side you will find the idyllic Rozenven . In the extensive Rucphense Forests, conifers alternate with heathland. Between junctions 52 and 41 there is a border marker that reminds us of \\\'het Klaveren Vrouwke\\\' . This was the pseudonym of a smuggler who regularly crossed the border dressed as a woman in the early 20th century. On May 5, 1916, he was shot dead by a border guard and the border post was later replaced in tribute to the smuggler.
