On a voyage of discovery in the Belgian Kempen

Oud-Turnhout
You start at Camping Berkenstrand near Retie, where you will set off well-rested after a night's sleep. First you drive along the Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten Canal. This canal was dug out with a shovel in the mid-nineteenth century in fifteen years. The arid Kempen soil around the canal became somewhat moister, and you can now see many plant and tree species there. Then you meander under Arendonk to the wooded residential area near Oud-Turnhout. You will be amazed!

De Liereman
Just before Oud-Turnhout you cycle past De Liereman, one of the oldest protected nature reserves in Belgium. You will pass the visitor center, it is worthwhile to stop and view the beautiful exhibition about the area. De Liereman is one of the parts of the Turnhout Fen area, which extends to the Kalmthoutse heath. The fens and the plants and animals that occur there are threatened on a European scale. A discovery!
