From the dense forests around an ancient abbey to the canals, lakes and streams near Dessel and Retie. Perfect for a summer cycling day.
Abbey
The route starts at Camping Berkenstrand, near Retie. After an overnight stay at this cozy spot you set off. Soon you will discover the stately abbey of Postel, in the middle of the Kempen woods. The Norbertine abbey was founded around 1140 to cultivate heathlands. The abbey has a real cheese dairy: the Postel abbey cheese and the Raphael cheese are renowned. But they also make abbey bread and Postel beer, all available in the shop at the entrance gate.
Water
The second part of the route has a completely different character: you can cycle along the water here. You drive a few kilometers along the banks of the Bocholt-Herentals Canal and various lakes. In Dessel you can see a four-arm point where various canals intersect. The area around Retie is also quite humid: this is the village of the Seven Nets, small streams that feed the river Kleine Nete. What a wonderful day out!
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
