From Wuustwezel into the Kempen

The Kempen border region between Zundert and Wuustwezel is full of quiet roads. They used to be used by smugglers, but now you can cycle there in peace and quiet.

The Mates
You start the route in Noordheuvel, a deciduous forest created around 1900 near the Belgian Kalmthout. Further on you pass through De Maatjes, a unique cross-border nature reserve with reed fields, swamp forests and wet meadows. There is a 7 meter high observation tower that offers you a beautiful panorama. Next to this tower, a piece of the Death Wire from the First World War has been reconstructed. A peat pole has also been placed that indicates the former thickness of the peat layer.

Wallsteijn estate
After crossing the border, you will pass the Wallsteijn Estate with its conifers, old oak avenues and hedgerows. The neoclassical country house was built around 1810. Make a pit stop at't Pannehûske. Here you can enjoy the many Burgundian delicacies at your leisure. Just past Wernhout you drive through the Lange Gooren and Krochten, an elongated nature reserve consisting of coniferous forests and swamps. What a silence!
