Walking in the countryside around Breda

Just above Breda you will make a beautiful varied walk. This route takes you through the Vrachelse Heide and the Lage Vuchtpolder. You will also pass the Spinolaschans.

Vrachelse Heide
Soon you walk onto the Vrachelse Heide. This nature reserve consists mainly of coniferous forest. It is wonderfully quiet walking here, a great opportunity to recharge the proverbial battery. When you walk out of the forests, you pass some characteristic Kempen long-façade farms with Flemish barns.

Low Vuchtpolder
The Lage Vuchtpolder consists mainly of wet, flowery hayfields. You will see moisture-loving plants and meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit and the redshank. During the Eighty Years' War, this polder was part of the Breda defence lines. It could be flooded to make life difficult for the enemy. The Spinolaschans is part of this history. This unique heritage was built in 1637 by Frederik Hendrik. He expanded a redoubt that had been built earlier by Spinola in 1625.
