Description

Fancy a brisk walk with a good dose of history? From the pleasant tourist town of Castricum you can take this beautiful walk to the Marquette estate. Back in Castricum you can discover the archaeological past of the region in the Huis van Hilde.

Marquette Estate
A lovely long walk through the countryside between Castricum and Heemskerk. Along the way you will discover the Marquette estate. The current castle was built on the foundations of a thirteenth-century castle. When the nearby Assumburg Castle became vacant in 1867, the panelling and utensils were transferred to Marquette Castle. During the Second World War, the castle was used by the occupiers as a weather station.

Archaeological Museum
Just before the end of the route you will come to the edge of Castricum along the Huis van Hilde, a museum about the archaeology and the settlement history of North Holland. You will be face to face with human figures from the past, such as Hilde from Castricum. Skeletons from the North Holland soil were provided with faces using forensic techniques, very special.
