Description

The beautiful Landgoed Bakkum is the oldest part of the North Holland Dune Reserve: it all started here. Take it along with a wonderful long walk through this reserve with its special nature.

Estate Bakkum
You walk along the edge of Castricum to the old estate of Bakkum, from which the North Holland Dune Reserve was created. You will see straight avenues and Scots pines that were planted around 1860. In the 1930s, a dune lake was created here as a job creation project to excavate sand for the construction of a viaduct. It was appropriately named Meertje van Vogelenzang: there are numerous birds, such as the kingfisher and bittern.

North Holland Dune Reserve
A little later on the Zeeweg you will pass Visitor Center De Hoep - here you can learn everything about the nature of the North Holland Dune Reserve. The variety of plant and animal species is a rarity in Europe. The nature reserve runs from Wijk aan Zee to Bergen, an elongated strip of about 20 kilometers with a width of 2.5 kilometers.
