Beautiful winding through the dunes, but also past an abbey and windmill. Along the banks of the Limmergat you drive to Limmen, the heart of the flower bulb region. What a variety!
Dunes
Soon you drive into the vast North Holland dune area. It is wonderful to make kilometers here between the conifers and dunes. What a silence you experience here! Further on, in Egmond-Binnen, you will pass the Sint-Adelbertabdij, the oldest in the Netherlands. The original tenth-century building was destroyed in 1573 by order of William of Orange. A new abbey was not built until 1935.
Flower bulbs
A little later you will see the Noordermolen in the polder, which drained the Groot-Limmerpolder. It was probably built in 1589, after the Spaniards destroyed the predecessor of this mill in 1573 during the Siege of Alkmaar. You cycle along the Limmergat to Limmen, the center of bulb cultivation in this area. The colorful fields are a picture when viewed from the bike, high in the saddle you have the best view!
