Beautiful meandering through the dunes, but also past an abbey and mill. You drive along the banks of the Limmergat to Limmen, the heart of the flower bulb region. What a change!
Dunes
You will soon drive into the vast North Holland dune area. It is wonderful to travel for miles here among the conifers and dunes. What silence you experience here! Further on, in Egmond-Binnen, you will pass the Sint-Adelbert Abbey, the oldest in the Netherlands. The original building from the tenth century was destroyed in 1573 on the orders of William of Orange. It was not until 1935 that a new abbey was built.
Flower bulbs
A little later you will see the Noordermolen in the polder that drained the Groot-Limmerpolder. It was probably built in 1589, after the Spanish destroyed the predecessor of this mill in 1573 during the Siege of Alkmaar. You cycle along the Limmergat to Limmen, the center of bulb cultivation in this area. The colorful fields are a picture-perfect view from the bike, high up in the saddle you have the most beautiful view!
