This route takes you through the rural area around Fort Vuren, a fort from 1844 that is part of the New Dutch Waterline. You walk along the Waal and over the city walls of the fortified city of Gorinchem.
The Dalem Gate
Before you set off, you can first have a drink and something to eat at the cozy Fort Vuren. Then you walk onto the Waaldijk. You look out over the river with its boats and the flowery floodplains. There are several old regional farms along the dike. On the edge of Gorinchem you pass through the Dalempoort from 1597. You will also see De Hoop, a flour mill from 1746.
City walls
From the city walls of Gorinchem you have beautiful views of the polders and the Waal. On the inside of the fortress you can see beautiful national monuments. Most of them are old, but De Rotonde on the Spijksedijk dates from 1940: it is an example of the Nieuwe Bouwen. From the village of Dalem you walk into the vast polder. How nice and quiet it is to walk here! Ideal for recharging the battery.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
