This beautiful cycling tour through
the Strabrechtse Heide nature reserve starts at
Natuurpoort De Plaetse . There is a sheepfold at De Plaetse, which is home to a flock of 350 Kempen heath sheep. Before or after the bike ride, enjoy a drink or lunch at
Heidecafé de Strabrechtse Heide and discover the heath garden or the gnome path. You will also find an insect garden including beehives, a clay wall, stump wall and various insect walls and hotels.
The Strabrechtse Heide
The Strabrechtse Heide nature reserve is the largest contiguous heathland area in Brabant and is largely managed by Staatsbosbeheer. It offers a varied landscape of dry and moist heath, drifting sand, heath fens, fields and groves. In the dry places there is shrub heather and juniper, in the wet places there is heath, willow straw, gale and bell gentian. A flock of sheep prevents the heath from becoming grassy. Southwest of the heath lies the stream valley of the Kleine Dommel, or the Rul. The vastness of the Strabrechtse Heide makes for wonderfully peaceful walking and cycling with views that look like a living painting.
Heidecafé de Strabrechtse Heide offers a wonderful resting point where you can enjoy a drink or a snack after a long walk or bike ride. We work with products from our own garden and from local suppliers. Heidecafé de Strabrechtse Heide is part of Kempenhaeghe. A progressive center of expertise in the field of epilepsy and neuroscience. From Tuesday to Friday, Kempenhaeghe clients are busy in and around the Heidecafé. They help in the kitchen, in the service, but also in the landscaping.
