Walking through Helenaveen

Helenaveen is the only peat colony in Brabant. Put on your waterproof walking shoes and come and experience the mining history here.

The route starts at Eethuis and Cafetaria't Veen. You can have a drink and a snack on the cozy terrace. At the same time you immediately see a piece of cultural history: the Helenavaart. A private canal that was used for peat transport. Helenaveen was founded in 1853 by the NV Maatschappij Helenaveen. The village was named after the wife of the director: Helena. The peatification continued until the 1970s!

Protected village view
In the countryside you walk between the grasslands. You also walk a bit through the Broemeerbos. In this small forest, deciduous and coniferous trees alternate. It is deafeningly quiet here: ideal to charge the battery. Due to its cultural-historical value, the area around junction 57 is a protected villagescape. You will see a small farm and simple church, Sunday school and minister's house. Via the Helenavaart you walk back to Eethuis and Cafetaria't Veen. Terrace!
