Hoeksche Waard, South Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 589988
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Come cycle through the beautiful Hoeksche Waard, one of the national landscapes of the Netherlands. Here you can enjoy the vast centuries-old polders and the many creeks and dikes. There are also picturesque towns along your route.
Sint Anthoniepolder
The first place on your route is Strijen, one of the oldest places in the Hoeksche Waard. You will see beautiful houses and farms, but also the fifteenth-century St. Lambertus Church. From the dike, after Cillarshoek, you look out to the right over the Sint Anthoniepolder, which dates from 1357! It is the only polder in the Hoeksche Waard that did not flood during the infamous Sint-Elizabeth flood of 1421. That is partly why there is a Romanesque church from 1357 on the dike!
Mills
A short distance away you will pass a number of beautiful old mills. First you pass the Antonymolen, a polder mill from 1842. Further on you drive past De Lelie, a flour mill from 1836. In's-Gravendeel is the Vliegend Hert, a flour mill from 1858. You drive the last part of the route along the Dordtsche Kil, a busy tidal river.
